Top 5 Teaching Strategies

Image
  1. 3-2-1 Research Reports   This is a good strategy because it asks you to identify:   3 things you found out   2 interesting things you learned   1 question you still have   I liked this one because it is a great way to identify your learning experience.   2. 3 Minute Pause   This strategy asks you to pick one or more of the following :   I changed my attitude about...   I became more aware of...   I was surprised about...   I felt...   I related to...    I empathized with...   I liked this one because it is another great one to identify your learning process.   3. Black-Out Poem   This one asks you to leave out key words that are important or stand out to you, and black out the others; so in the end you create a blackout poem. I liked this one because I found out that I highlighted a lot about how important self-reflection was and how teachers shouldn’t fear discussions of black his...

It's 2022, Why are School's still Segregated?

Image
I ask myself this question often! It truly is sad that in the world we live in discrimination has always been a part of it, even today. Segregation today had a start from Redlining; Redlining was the segregation of housing by a green and red side, the green side was for rich white Americans, and the red was predominately African Americans because of the cost of housing being 30% more for them. With that separation in neighborhoods, came segregation in schools, and as time continued, the segregation continued. Because of the separation of housing the the predominately white area had higher property taxes so they had better schools, and the predominately African American area had less funding for their schools, and it still is like that in most areas today. As stated in the "Redlining: Black History for White People" podcast, "America wasn't segregated by accident", it came from the lawmakers in the beginning, and not much has changed.  It's hard to hope for ...

What Does Money Really have to do With It

Image
Money has always been a big thing in the world, no matter what time period the world was in, it's just gotten more important as time has gone on. Now, anything and everything costs, and a lot of times the costs exceed the amount a person has. Depending on the district, depends on how much money a school receives. The reason I say the money a school gets depends on the district is because depending on the location of the district, a school may not get as much funding; if it's a poorer area they have little to no funding, in richer areas they have decent funding compared to the other areas. In the selection of articles from the class module this week, one of the articles that stood out,and was a great example is the one linked below. The article explained how Texas funds schools in a really great way that people can understand. I feel like even with the schools who don't have great funding, it all depends on the effort teachers give to the students' education, because wi...

Culturally Responsive Teaching

Image
In the image above, I took notes on a module for class about "Culturally Relevant Teaching", and transferred those notes to create a Word Cloud; I actually had never created one, until this time. It was definitely interesting to see that the biggest phrases/words used was "All Students" and "Equity". For me I can see how that could make sense because in reality in order to have a culturally responsive environment, it's important to make sure that  all students feel welcome no matter what they need or don't have. In the module, it was said that, "the foundation of culturally responsive instruction is not technical but relational. Authentic Caring" and "becoming culturally responsive starts with showing genuine caring that recognizes the unique gifts and talents of every child."

How does Gender affect the Teaching Profession?

Image
In the world of teaching, teaching has always been a profession full of females, even today! In many of my classes there's all girls and maybe 1 or 2 guys. When we talk about gender in the teaching profession, it can go beyond just the genders of teachers, it can go as far as how teachers handle gender. I remember reading about the difference of praise sometimes for boys, vs. the praise girls will get. Boys would get praised for their capabilities academically and girls would get praise for their appearance, which would often not give them a chance to show how capable they really are just as much as the boys. Recently it is interesting to see that the teaching profession is constantly growing and changing with gender, and I love it so much because it truly welcomes all and makes those select few students feel included as well!!

Is Schooling Equitable?

Image
When we ask if schooling is equitable, we are really asking if schools are fair and provide equal opportunity. In order to understand equity it is important to know the difference between equity and equality. Equality is giving everyone the same thing in order to keep it fair, while Equity is giving everyone what they need to have the same opportunities. In my opinion, I feel like school is not equitable because almost all schools have some way of not having equal opportunity for all students. One of the biggest ones that I see is a lot of students miss out on things if they don't have money, and a lot of times that can be because of the social class someone is in or the background they come from. For instance if a student comes from a background of money or they play sports they have a better opportunity of getting accepted into colleges mostly with full-ride scholarships, unlike students who don't they often have to work extra extra hard to have full-ride scholarships to th...

Do I have the full picture?

Image
I truly feel that many of us never have the full picture. When we see people we only see what they look like on the outside, we don't see what they truly go through or what they are going through currently. In school we usually only have one side of a story, when there are multiple sides to every story. To get the full picture we have to be able to take the time to get to know that person or acknowledge all sides of the story, instead of judging a book by it's cover. When I was in grade school something that I loved about my 9th grade history teacher, is that she always provided us with multiple points of view from all kinds of people, on history topics that we discussed, and made it easy for us to understand that there is more than one side than just the "white man's" side, she had showed me stories from African American survivors that I had never heard about, until being in her class. As a future teacher, when it comes to my students learning I will definitely ...

Whose stories are told and whose stories remain in the margins?

Image
When we talk about a marginalized person, it is important to know what that word really means. A marginalized person is someone who experiences discrimination or is treated as insignificant because of the way they identify or are identified. That student is someone who may come from a low-income background, identifies as an lgbtqa+, disabled, identifies as an ESL student, or is even racially minoritized. With being a marginalized student, there are many different difficulties they may face. It shouldn’t even be an issue because no one should ever have to feel like they are less than; because of who a person is or the way that they identify themselves. There are many preconceived ideas of how someone is based off of the way someone is identified, and that will often be the reason someone judges somebody, before they even get to know that person as who they are.  As a future educator I would want to provide multiple points of view with readings and stories so that my students ...

How Do We Talk About Issues That Matter?

Image
In the time period that we are in, it is important to talk about controversial issues, because they matter. Like the issues we read about in history books, the issues that we face now, will become a part of a history book, so they can be taught to the future generation to come. When we talk about these issues, we are allowing them to matter, it is also giving each of us time to learn and think about making a difference to help be the change. Every issue matters because we are the humans who have either created it or are affected by it, which is why it is important for us to find a common ground to discuss these issues. It overall truly matters how we go about sparking this conversation, it has to be in a spirit of open-mindedness to other opinions. You have to come to that conversation, expecting to hear another side of the issue, and not just your own, so that you can have a chance to extend your understanding. Once you open your heart and mind to these tough conversations, over ...

What is the Purpose of School?

Image
To me I feel like school is meant to teach you the things, you wouldn't learn if you were out of school. According to the "Education in Society" Crash course, they define education as the institution through which society provides it's members with all kinds of important knowledge. Students go to school to gain the knowledge they need in order to succeed in life outside of school, they learn things like how to calculate totals, count money, read, and fun facts like the history of building they will visit. Without an education it would be a lot harder to go through the world, because you wouldn't have the most important skill to know, when it comes to making decisions, which is critical thinking.  Marginalized students, are students who who come from poverty, abusive households, etc. Most of these students may have a hard time in school, because of what they have going on at home, so it's really helpful when they have a good support system at their schools to h...

Why Teach?

Image
As a kid I remember being in my room with my stuffed animals and a cardboard box that I taped white paper on, to make it into a whiteboard. With that board, I would play ""teacher" and teach them addition, subtraction, basically stuff that I knew from school at the time. I remember as I was playing this game, I was trying to play as my teacher that I had at the time which was Ms. Sphone (Can't quite remember the spelling, but it's pronounced 'spone'). As time went on, around late middle school, early high school I began to babysit for many of my mom's friends and grew a passion for kids because of how much fun I would have babysitting. As I got older I had a Theatre teacher in high school who inspired me to actually apply for a school for education, because she was so passionate with her students and always came to class with energy that always made you excited to be there, I was able to take that and spread it to my kiddos at the after school progra...
